Apples contain a large number, and high levels, of phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity. In addition to their potent antioxidant effect, apple polyphenols have the potential to be hepatoprotective and inhibit hepatic steatosis, protect the stomach lining from damage by aspirin, protect colonic mucosa in ulcerative colitis, and reduce inflammatory processes, which lead to bowel disease. Studies have also shown that apple polyphenols have the capacity for the elimination of hazardous materials such as lead and mercury from the body, antibacterial reduction of postprandial glycemia, or inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. Studies have shown also that the total phenolic, flavonoid content of apple peel polyphenol extract (PAP) is significantly higher than that of apple fleshes (PAF). Subjects administered with 250 mg/kg of PAP and PAF for 28 days showed lower blood pressure, improved endothelial function, ameliorated lipid homeostasis, and decreased insulin resistance. Additionally, research results have suggested that apple polyphenols can inhibit atherosclerosis.
Black Rice and Amla: Natural Allies Against Obesity and Liver Diseases
Black rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been suggested to reduce obesity and improve lipid metabolism in a high fat diet. Oral intake of the aqueous extract for a period of 42 days resulted in significant improvement in body weight gain, insulin, leptin, and blood lipid levels. Further, in in vivo trials, the extract triggered significant increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL-C) levels.
Treatment with Emblica officinalis (amla) is shown to be beneficial in mitigating hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, hepatocarcinogenesis, and hepatotoxicity resulting from iron overload. The phytochemicals of amla, quercetin, gallic acid, corilagin, and ellagic acid were observed to exert hepatoprotective actions against toxicity of paracetamol, microcystins, galactosamine, and lipopolysaccharide.
Citrus Aurantium: A Potential Natural Anti-Obesity Agent
Because of its role in controlling thermogenesis and adipogenesis, Citrus aurantium can be regarded as a possible anti-obesity agent. C. aurantium extract intake for eight weeks resulted in a considerable decrease in adipose tissue, body weight, and total serum cholesterol. Beneficial effects of naringin and neohesperidin from C. aurantium are attributed to their advantageous biological and medicinal effects including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, and anxiolytic effects.
